History of Tarot: Four Pathways

The history of tarot is shrouded in mystery and there is still much debate among scholars and historians about its origins. Most scholars generally believe that the tarot originated in Italy during the 15th century as a card game known as "tarocchi".

The earliest known tarot decks were hand-painted and were used for entertainment purposes among the upper classes of society. It wasn't until the 18th century that the tarot began to be used for divination and spiritual purposes.

One of the most influential figures in the history of tarot was the French occultist and writer, Eliphas Levi, who in the mid-19th century, began to associate the cards with mystical and spiritual practices. He believed that the cards had the power to unlock the secrets of the universe and to reveal hidden knowledge about the self and the world.

In the early 20th century, the tarot became increasingly popular among spiritual seekers and mystics, particularly in Europe and the United States.

Today, tarot is rapidly growing in popularity as a tool for divination, self-discovery, and spiritual growth. There are countless decks available, each with its own unique symbolism and interpretation. What usually remains in even the most artistically interpreted decks are the most basic symbols of human experience. While the true origins of the tarot may be shrouded in mystery, its enduring popularity and power to inspire and enlighten is undeniable.
